2010 Baja 1000

43rd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000

It’s about that time again!  The 2010 Baja 1000 will be held November 17 through November 20.

This year will be a peninsula run meaning the race will start in Ensenada and run all the way to La Paz.  Most of the time the race is done in a loop format where it starts and ends in Ensenada.  The format on the race will place an extra burden on the support and chase crews as they must travel the entire distance and don’t have the luxury of the racers looping back.  It will be interesting to see if the number of entrants to the race will be affected by the ongoing violence in Mexico.  While the Baja is separated somewhat from the main body of Mexico, most people who are in or watch the race typically travel through Tijuana on the California border.  This area has seen a lot of violence and corruption lately. With the race this year being a “point to point” race, racers and support crews will also be required to travel deep into the Baja, almost to the very end of thepeninsula.  Hopefully the sparse population of most of Baja and separation of the mainland will keep people coming to participate in the Baja 1000.  It would be a shame to see such a legendary race be brought to it’s knees by senseless violence.  The race brings a much needed financial boost to the economy of the area.   In looking at the official sponsors of the race this year, it seems to me that there are fewer sponsors from the United States.  It would be interesting to see if this is a reflection on current conditions in Mexico.
